What is Pelvic floor
The pelvic floor is a combination of multiple muscles with fascia and ligamentous attachments creating a dome-shaped diaphragm across the boney pelvic outlet. The pelvic floor muscles are located between the tailbone (coccyx) and the pubic bone within the pelvis.
Pelvic floor muscles support your pelvic organs, bladder, bowels and uterus. They also help maintain bladder and bowel control and play an important role in sexual sensation and function.
What to expect from a first appointment
Keep calm, relax! There is no need to be anxious or shamed when you are going to attend a Women’s Health/ Pelvic Specialist Physiotherapist.
The Physiotherapist will begin by asking specific questions to try to establish what is causing your symptoms, to understand your complaints, to go through your history. Then will talk about your goals, what you want to achieve and your expectations from the treatment.
Some women get very anxious and nervous about having a vaginal examination as part of their assessment, but really, there is no reason for that. Vaginal internal assessment is the only way the pelvic floor can be assessed properly, but it’s totally up to you want it done at your first appointment . The assessment of pelvic floor area is done with the insertion of a gloved finger (one or two fingers), also in some cases we may use a biofeedback machine to have more accurate results.Â
The Physiotherapist is here to help you, to talk to you and ensure, during all the assessment, that you are safe, comfortable and happy with the examination.
